CRISPR Based Genetics

During infection, pathogens hijack specific host genes that they need to replicate themselves. By experimentally modifying host genes using CRISPR/Cas9, and then quantifying the impact of our changes on pathogen fitness, we can identify the host genes which are critical for pathogen infection. We then study these host genes and the proteins they encode, to design strategies to interfere with their function in the pathogen life cycle.
